Why Ghana?

Lumana Map

1. The need: We wanted to reach those people who were severely neglected by current programs designed for the world's poor. In researching microfinance around the world, we found that only 1% of the microfinance industry extended to Africa and even less reached the rural areas we work.

2. The area: Of 6.9 million Ghanaians in poverty, only about 233,000 people currently have access to microfinance programs. As we looked further, we found that a majority of those institutions were in urban areas (80%), leaving a tremendous need for credit in the rural areas. Our services are aimed at helping rural communities that live in poverty and have no access to basic financial services.

3. The government: Ghana was the first country in Africa to gain its independence and has since become a model for African democracy, peaceful elections and progressive leadership in Africa. Ghana stands out because of its growing economy and stable government; conditions which led us to believe that it was the perfect spot for small enterprises aimed at benefiting its citizens to flourish.

4. The people: The villages we operate in are filled with highly motivated entrepreneurs -  skilled farmers, craftsmen, fishermen and more.  These individuals posses the necessary drive to succeed, but need credit and mentorship to grow their businesses and a structure to save their profits to benefit themselves and their families. We seek to fill this void and empower the members of the communities we work in to become the authors of their own futures.
